Tour Overview

Begin your Mount Meru trekking adventure with a warm welcome at your hotel in Arusha. After a detailed briefing by our experienced guides, your journey starts with a drive to the Momela Gate, the entry point to Arusha National Park. Over the next four days, you’ll hike through the stunning landscapes of Meru, accompanied by armed ranger escorts for added security. This trek offers opportunities to spot wildlife such as buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and various antelope along the way.

As you progress, you’ll traverse the lush Montane Forest, ascend scenic ridges, and enjoy spectacular views of the Ash Cone and Meru Crater. The summit climb to Socialist Peak rewards you with a breathtaking sunrise and stunning views of Kilimanjaro.

After completing the trek, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest. If you wish to extend your adventure in Tanzania, optional extensions to Kilimanjaro climbing, Zanzibar, or safaris are available.

Arrival

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our dedicated driver will be waiting for you, holding a sign with your name. You’ll receive a warm welcome as you begin your adventure. From the airport, you’ll be transferred comfortably to Sal salinero hotel , a charming establishment known for its inviting atmosphere.

After checking in, enjoy a delicious meal at the hotel. Later, our experienced mountain coordinators and your guide will provide a pre-trekking briefing, preparing you for the incredible journey ahead. Take some time to unwind and enjoy the hotel’s amenities, including a swimming pool, a beautiful garden, and a bar and restaurant, ensuring a relaxing start to your expedition.

Arusha to Momela Gate to Meriakamba Hut

After enjoying breakfast, you’ll be transferred from Moshi to Arusha National Park, where you’ll check in with park personnel before embarking on your trek from Momella Gate. The journey begins in the late morning, taking you through open grasslands that are home to buffalo, warthogs, and giraffes, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

As you progress, the trail features a steady climb into the lush montane forest. You’ll pause for lunch near the famous Fig Tree, then continue through less dense areas, where you can spot a variety of birds and monkeys, including the striking black-and-white Colobus. By mid-afternoon, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Meru’s towering cliffs and the Ash Cone. Arriving at Miriakamba Huts, nestled in a serene grassy glade, you’ll have a perfect spot to relax and take in the breathtaking surroundings. Keep an eye out—you might even spot a giraffe wandering through camp!

Meriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Get an early start to catch a glimpse of Kilimanjaro before the clouds gather. Your trek begins with a steep ascent from Miriakamba Hut to the crater rim, known as Elephant Ridge. The trail weaves through lush montane forest, providing breathtaking views as you climb. You will eventually reach the giant heather and moorland situated between Little Meru and Meru.

Upon arriving at Saddle Hut, you can enjoy a hot lunch to refuel. The afternoon offers time to rest, or you may opt for an optional hike to the summit of Little Meru (3,820 m / 12,533 ft). This hike rewards you with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, especially as the sun sets, casting a golden hue over the peaks and valleys. The ascent provides a fantastic opportunity to acclimatize and prepare for the summit climb the next day.

Summit Day (Socialist Peak) to Saddle Hut to Miriakamba Hut

3,570 m to 4,566 m

5 km up, 13 km down

Cycling Time:

12-14 hours time

Your summit day begins early at 2 AM, kicking off with a steep climb to Rhino Point (3,800 m / 12,467 ft). Depending on the weather, you may pause here to witness a spectacular sunrise. If conditions permit, you will continue along a rugged ridge, reaching Cobra Point (4,350 m / 14,271 ft) just as the sun begins to rise.

The views from Cobra Point are stunning, featuring the crater rim cliffs, the Ash Cone, and Kilimanjaro towering above the clouds, along with expansive vistas of the Rift Valley.After a further hour of climbing, you’ll reach the summit of Mount Meru.

The hike back to Rhino Point in the morning light is equally breathtaking, offering a chance to soak in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. Once back at Saddle Hut, you’ll enjoy a well-deserved brunch and take some time to rest before continuing your descent to Miriakamba Hut for the night (if you’re on a 4-day itinerary). This day will be memorable, filled with incredible views and a strong sense of achievement as you conquer one of Tanzania’s stunning peaks.

Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate to Moshi

2,514 m to 1,500 m

3-5 hours time

On your final day, you’ll take a different, faster route down through open grasslands and mixed forests, providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities along the way. Keep your eyes peeled for various animals as you enjoy stunning views of the crater and the expansive plains of Arusha National Park.

By late morning, you’ll arrive at Momella Gate, where you’ll have the chance to bid farewell to your dedicated guides and porters who accompanied you on this incredible journey. Following this heartfelt farewell, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Sal salinero hotel or a similar hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved celebration of your trekking adventure.

This marks the end of an unforgettable experience on Mount Meru, where you’ve conquered challenges and created lasting memories.
